To Pray is Not to Faint

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 18:1-8

Key Verse: Luke 18:1 (KJV) — “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”

Life challenges abound everywhere. Psychosocial stressors are all around. The pandemic enough is not making life any easier for any of us. Businesses are closing; homes are battered, and churches are distressed. The only common reaction is that many people are losing hope during these troubled times. I met a brother who sadly informed me about his ministry winding up for a summary close down. We are all in a morally turbulent time similar to the description of scriptures about the end of times. We may not be facing the same issues, but we are all faced with the risk of losing our hearts.

As a pastor, great has been my trouble as I watch the community I serve grapple with the difficulties of the pandemic; loss of relatives; members' issues, and my own immediate and extended family needs. Besides, I have charge of immense daily responsibilities such as counseling and circulating millions of devotional messages and responding to hundreds of emails, messages, and calls. These are beside my moments with God and His Word. With such a life, I can clearly see what Jesus means by “men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” Except we depend on God through the blessing of intimate praying and trust him for daily strength and power, we would surely lose heart and fail. What can we learn from the fact that Jesus’s first recipients of this parable were Pharisees? We must bear in mind that prayer is not about self-righteousness and religion. It is a function of natural and practical trust in God rather than self.

Quote for the Day: “For a man not to grow weary or give over during these trying days is to trust in the omnipotent God.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, give me strength like the eagles. Help me walk and not be weary. Strengthen me to run and not be faint, in Jesus's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
