Treasure of the Heart

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, May 12, 2022

Today Text: Matthew 6:19-24

Key Verse: Matthew 6:21 (ESV): “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Treasure and possession are not the same. 'However, whether you possess your treasure or it is an ambition, it is still yours, anyway, whether you possess it or not. What makes it a treasure is the position it fills in your heart, not the possession. A man (male or female) with a heart set on worldly desires and goods will live in constant and continued pursuit of earthly treasure. And, in the same way, spiritual treasures drive anyone who values Christ to stay focused on eternity and store up treasures in Heaven.

Beloved, do not be deceived, anything you personally throw the weight of your heart upon the best, and most eagerly strives to attain, or you diligently protect; and/or you dread to lose the most — that is a treasure right there. For some, it is money; for others, it is material things, relationships, and position. So, why not probe your own heart, and ask the Holy Spirit to purge you of ill-fated desire, which hurts your spirit, yet you always think that you are, or will be, blessed if you have them; and therefore, you are discontented if you don’t or can’t have them.

Brethren, let us not value money and material gains more than God. Doing this provokes God to jealousy. How we treasure God is being revealed daily in how we use our time, spend our money, and deploy our energy. Our hearts are often tied to whatever we value most in life. Jesus in Matthew 6:21 says: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” So, our admonition, today, is to grow in our desire for God—a passion to value and build heaven-bound and based treasure.

Quote for the Day: “Human attitude always reveals what the heart values most.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, genuine wisdom, instruction and insight come from You, Lord. Please fill my heart daily with deepened desire to pursue Your truth — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
