Vanity of Vanities

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, April 14, 2020

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 1:1-11

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NIV): “Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”

We all face that moment of our age when everyone — great or small, rich or poor — seem to be distressed and disappointed. Our well made plans come to naught; hopes of many are blasted; our devices fail us; our children forlorn, and our heart sink deep within. It has now been made more apparent that all godless men live in a scene of illusion. Our vanity is out, and the preacher exclaims it mournful and regrettably that outside of God, all is vanity of vanities — all is vanity!

With such double emphasis, the preacher strikes the key-note of our whole age — everything we grasp is all but vanity. An Emperor of Brazil once flaunted his royalty and wealth, and amazed the world when he gave his Queen a dress made of spiders' webs. It had taken 17,000 webs to make it. No doubt that was uncommon; but it is a clear reflection of man’s common pursuit of emptiness. We spend great amount of time and labor to cover oursolves with vanities, wounding our imperishable souls to sorrow because of the perishable things of life. We are therefore called to give up our vanities, and take the beautiful robe of Christ's righteousness, peace and joy.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me desist from pursuing vanity. Give me true peace that comes from knowing and following Jesus. Amen.
