Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6
Key Verse: Psalms 23:4 (KJV): “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
As long as we are here on this side of the divide, there will always be one valley or the other to deal with. Sometimes it is a valley of joy or even that of celebration. It hide are awesome, but we also have valleys of confusion, at other times, the valley of decision, or that of deception — and I tell you that all these are easy valleys. Because life also puts us in much more terrible valleys. David identifies one of those as the valley of the shadow of death. Whoever we are, and whatever we are going through, right now, or would ever go through; there is always one valley or the other to deal with. The fall of man brings us into a natural habitat in which those hard places on our journey become inevitable.
Valleys so easily depress us, and make us to doubt God or lose sight of his goodness. They jolt us into the puzzles called the problem of evil, leaving us to begin to wonder how to reconcile evil, pain or suffering with the reality of God’s omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient power. But instead of questioning where God is/was while we walk through those valleys, we can learn from David’s confidence. We too can always trust God to walk us through the valleys. A few truths shine brightly from this text.
First, the shadows will always come. It is not “if I walk,” it is though or when I walk. Secondly, you are never alone. When you find yourself in the valley, God is with you. Shadows are always evidence that light is present. All you need is turn to the opposite direction of the shadow and you will be facing the light. Jesus is the light for the world. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). In the third place, God always brings us through. It is always a walk through; rather than just a walk in. And lastly, there is always God’s comforting rod and thy staff ever present both for guiding and defending you through the process.
Quote for the Day: “Shadows are always evidence that light is present. All you need is turn to the opposite direction of the shadow and you will be facing the light.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for always being my hope when my soul is in the valley. You are always my Light in this darkness. You’re my glory and the lifter up of my head. I continue to yearn for Your Presence, Your precious touch, and the empowerment of Your Spirit’s comfort through life’s valleys —in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
