Today’s Text: Proverbs 18:15-24
Key Verse: Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV): “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
We all value friendship. Yes, we have many of them but we are closer to some than others. Some friends are our casual acquaintance, some of them are in our inner circle, and a very few of them are our covenant besties — who bring special unique qualities of truly good confidants into a relationship. The emphasis in this text is that it is not the plurality of friends that matters or blesses us. The author refers to many friends as unreliable. Indeed, one may have many friends and still run into problems.
Multiple friends is not what guarantees help in our days of need. The social media world has jolted the world into the fantasy of phony superficial friendship in which we have thousands or millions of friends. But they all disappear very quickly during difficult days. Go and check what has happened to myriads of Will Smith’s connections following his fall. But do you know that there are still a few true friends, who remain closely connected with him during these lonely days?
This makes it important for us to give careful thoughts to our friends. Any friend you’re not comfortable to be yourself with, but you need to put up a front and pretend is probably not a good friend. Anyone who does not accept you or your truth unconditionally, and you need caution to tell unpleasant truth belongs to the myriads of unhelpful friends that cannot help you keep your life in focus.
What we all need to be, or need our friends to be are friends who are not phony with each other — who are genuine enough to show you who they really are; and take us for who we truly are. This kind of friendship is compared to the love of a brother because brothers have no need not to be honest with us. They don’t pretend to be happy with you when they are not. They don’t fake spirituality, or make themselves seem stronger, more successful, or better than they really are. They are genuine, and they stick close.
Quote for the Day: “A person that will have peace must choose his friends because we are under assumed obligations to people we call our friends." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please make me a man of sincere motive that treasure, love and trust my friends. Also, surround me with people that share the same kingdom values with me, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
