Waxing Stronger in Spiritual Discernment

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Friday, January 16, 2026

Texts: Hebrews 5:11–14

Key Verse: Hebrews 5:14 (ESV) — “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

When I was a young Christian, I mistook discernment for suspicion or personal indecision. But as I matured and waxed stronger in knowledge, not only did I grow in my understanding that discernment difers from those, but I also appreciated discernment as the Spirit-enabled ability to see as God sees. This year, as we are being called to wax very strong, strength without discernment becomes vulnerable to deception and misdirection. To wax stronger in discernment is to desire more than open doors—you seek the right doors.

Discernment protects you from calling what is harmful “harmless” and what is carnal “spiritual.” Therefore, it is a mark of maturity. God’s desire is that you grow beyond spiritual infancy, where you swallow everything that looks or sounds impressive. Waxing stronger in discernment this year means allowing the Word and the Spirit to train your senses through practice. This begins with humility, acknowledging that you can be wrong and that not every Good-looking opportunity is God-ordained.

As you grow in love and knowledge, your ability to approve what is excellent will increase. To wax stronger in discernment is to test teachings, impressions, and invitations against Scripture and inner witness. There are relationships, alliances, and platforms that look attractive but lead to compromise. This year, discernment will require you to ask hard questions, seek counsel, and wait on God instead of rushing decisions. These are not delays; they are protections.

Be ready to prioritize inner peace over outward pressure. When the Holy Spirit raises a red flag, do not ignore it. When you misjudge a situation, learn from it instead of hardening your heart. Waxing stronger in discernment means fewer regrets, clearer choices, and a more precise walk in the will of God.

Action Steps: Today, pause and ask: “Lord, where have I been moving by emotions, trends, or pressure instead of discernment?” Write down key decisions on your table now. Bring them before God in prayer, search the Scriptures, and, where necessary, seek godly counsel before acting.

Quote for the Day: “Discernment is love guided by light. As you train your senses by the Word and the Spirit, you will wax stronger in judgment and walk safely.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Good Shepherd. Deliver me from spiritual blindness and naivety. Sharpen my spiritual senses to distinguish truth from error, and Your will from mere options. Let my decisions this year align with Your wisdom and protect my destiny. In Your mighty name, Lord Jesus, Amen.
