Waxing Stronger in Wisdom

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Thursday, January 8, 2026

James 1:2–5; Colossians 1:9–11 (ESV)

Key Verse: James 1:5 (ESV) — “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

In a year of waxing very strong, strength without wisdom is dangerous. Power must be directed by divine counsel or it will be wasted on the wrong battles. Wisdom is not cleverness; it is the God-given ability to see life from His perspective and to act accordingly. To wax stronger in wisdom is to refuse to live by impulse, pressure, or emotion, and to instead submit decisions, desires, and directions to the mind of Christ.

Scripture shows that wisdom often grows in the soil of trials. James teaches that when believers face various trials, they can ask God for wisdom rather than merely asking for escape. Challenges then become classrooms where God trains discernment, sharpens judgment, and matures perspective. Waxing stronger in wisdom this year means asking, “Lord, what are You teaching me in this?” rather than only, “Lord, when will this end?”

Paul prayed that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. This kind of wisdom helps you walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, bearing fruit in every good work. Waxing stronger in wisdom is not just about making fewer mistakes; it is about living more intentionally in the center of God’s will. As wisdom increases, confusion decreases and fruitfulness multiplies.

Be ready to pursue wisdom at the feet of Jesus. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and grows through reverent listening to His Word. As you sit with Scripture daily, the Holy Spirit will apply truth to practical areas of your life: relationships, finances, ministry, and decisions. The more you honor the Word as final authority, the more you will recognize the voice of wisdom in daily choices.

Be ready to surround yourself with wise counsel. Wisdom grows in community, not in isolation. God often packages wisdom in spiritual leaders, mentors, and brothers and sisters who walk closely with Him. To wax stronger in wisdom, you must be humble enough to ask, listen, and learn. Pride says, “I know enough”; wisdom says, “Teach me more, Lord, through whom You will.”

Be ready to obey promptly once wisdom is revealed. Wisdom unused becomes wisdom lost. When God makes His will clear, delay and hesitation weaken the impact of that wisdom. Waxing stronger in wisdom this year means becoming quick to align action with revelation. The more you practice prompt obedience, the clearer and stronger the flow of wisdom will become in your life.

Action Steps: Today, pause and ask: “Lord, in which area of my life am I most in need of wisdom right now?” Write down three specific decisions or situations that require divine wisdom. Commit to praying James 1:5 daily over these areas and seek godly counsel where needed. Choose one practical step of obedience in an area where God has already given you light.

Quote for the Day: “Strength without wisdom is noise; strength with wisdom is impact. If you will ask and obey, you will wax stronger in wisdom this year.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Dear Lord Jesus, You are made unto me wisdom from God. I confess my need for Your wisdom in every area of my life. Deliver me from foolish choices, impulsive decisions, and stubborn self-will. Fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Guide my steps, guard my decisions, and grant me a heart that quickly obeys Your counsel. Let my life this year reflect the beauty and stability of Your wisdom. In Your mighty name, Lord Jesus, Amen.
