Today’s Text: Proverbs 22:1-23
Key Verse: Proverbs 22:1 (ESV): “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. “
As a parent, I know how to choose a well desired name for my children at birth—and I have heard several comments such as: “Wow, that’s such a beautiful name!” But everyone of us must realize that no matter how desirable the names are that our parents give to us, they are still not good enough except we give value to them by our character. The formula for attaining value for our names is quite clear: Good character! Our character sticks on our names like an emblem. When the writer of Proverbs wrote those words on the value of a good name, he had obtained so much popularity across board; but he has learnt that fame and good name are not necessarily the same.
For the sake of fame, most people have thrown their names under the bus. In verses 8 and 9, out text tells us how to achieve a good name. Good name comes by choosing righteous behavior over wicked action. A portrait of two ways of living was set before us: The first way being to squander our lives by living selfishly as if no one else matters. The author calls this wickedness, and describes it as extreme form of selfishness, and a bad moral. The second way is the life of openness and generosity that shares with others who lack. Generous men in scriptures are accounted as righteous, and they achieve good names before their generation.
The rich man in Jesus parable did not have a good name in heaven because he was mean to Lazarus on earth. Many of us need to learn a new approach to Deuteronomy 5:11 which says, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” God wants His name protected! If you are identified with God live in such a way that you do not drag His name to the mud. People who forget they are to be example of the believer in words, purity, and charity cause chaos in their lives and soil their names in the society at large. So, what’s your name, and how do people react to it when announced?!
Quote for the Day: “If and when the world keeps our lives in view and are grateful for being good example; then we can claim we are a shining light.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please let my life praise You. Let my character bring Your reputation to the farthest part of the earth, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
