What’s in a Name (Part 5)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, December 3, 2021

Today’s Text: Matthew 16:13-20

Key Verse: Matthew 16:13 (NIV): “When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?””

The personality of Jesus has been an extraordinarily all-time example. His is such a sweet reputation that no other mortal in all creation and generations has neither attained nor could ever attain. Yet it mattered to Him who people say He was. And so, why should it not matter to us? Why should a Christian say I don’t care what people say about me? Why should we not give a dam? If we are indeed followers of Jesus Christ, we should seek to be like Him in all things: including caring much about our name.

Friends, if what people say about Christ was important to him, what they say about us should matter to us also—even more. I know that we naturally like to deflect such questions when asked. If you don’t really know what your neighbors think about Jesus, what do they say about you? We should not deflect this one. It is crucial we maintain our reputation as light unto this dark world. The patterns in your life will determine people’s patterns of thought about you. It’s great to desire a good. It’s ok to want people to say good things about us. But it is not enough. To be like Jesus calls for a life of integrity, gravity and love. The prince of this world scrutinized Jesus but found nothing to accuse him about. What would happen if it were you?

Quote for the Day: “To be Christlike, we must daily ask ourselves the Christlike question what do people say we are? And we should not be afraid they would come up with a bad response?” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, give me new life; and make me true light. Let me be a living reflection of who You are in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
