Today’s Text: Genesis 32:24-32
Key Verse: Genesis 32:27 (HCSB): “What is your name?” the man asked.” Jacob,” he replied.“
We have dwelt much on the reputation side of name. Who or what people say we are matters to God. Today, we shall begin to meditate on the mystic side of a name. Why did the angel of the Lord ask Jacob, “What is your name?” Or, why did Manoah, in his case, ask the angel of the LORD, “What is your name?” There is a spiritual dimension to names than we all realized. Some of our thirsts to solve strange questions which surround our spiritual life are not only shrouded in our personality, but they are natural and consistent with our identity. People’s names are as much a part of them than their very skin. Yes, it may be easier to peel off a skin than it is the name. For a name is one’s natural passport that goes before him everywhere as well as testify to his uniqueness, presence and character. Please give careful thoughts to who people say you are. It’s like more true to who you are than who you think or say you are.
The angel probably knew Jacob better than he knew himself; but it was an opportunity for confession and surrender. It was a new birth moment fir him. Thus, he (Jacob) walked away from the angel with a new additional name. A new sun rose upon him. He will no more be a truant nor an ordinary pilgrim. He became a prince of the most high. It was new life for him. There is so much in a name. Yes, he walked away halting upon his thigh, but never again to be crooked. He walked away with empowered with God and man. Perhaps, like Jacob, you are confronted by moment of reality and asked to confess your true identity, which the questioner already knows after all. If like him, you are able to take the advantage of holding unto God in prayer for your much desired change in life and reputation; never shake off the clinging grip even if you’re risking a thigh, like Jacob, never let Him go except He bless you. As this led to Jacob’s solemn decoration with new title and actualization of new life.
Quote for the Day: “A man’s name is a testimonial to his uniqueness, presence and character.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You for redeeming me from the power of the flesh. Thank You for saving me from destruction. And thank You for giving me a new spiritual identity and a name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
