When Man Sleeps

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Friday, May 29, 2026

Text: Matthew 13:25–30

Key Verse: “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.” — Matthew 13:25 (KJV)

Today’s threshing takes us into the sobering parable of the wheat and the tares, where Jesus reveals that the enemy is not only real but intentional, strategic, and patient. The attack did not happen in broad daylight, but “while men slept,” showing that spiritual carelessness creates opportunity for intrusion. This is a warning to the church and to every believer that the enemy often works quietly, sowing damage where vigilance has grown weak.

In this text, our Lord is teaching about a mystery of the kingdom of heaven, in which good and counterfeit seed can grow together for a season. The servants asked, “Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?” and the answer was clear: “An enemy has done this” (Matthew 13:27–28). This means that not every disturbance is accidental, not every corrupting influence is natural, and not every challenge can be understood without recognizing warfare. The enemy sows with purpose, and he often waits for moments of spiritual drowsiness, neglect, or distraction.

This parable also reveals the reality of midnight warfare. Night seasons are often when contamination is introduced, when discernment is blurred, and when people assume all is well because outward appearances remain calm. But Jesus teaches us that the harvest will one day expose what was hidden. Until then, believers must remain spiritually fervent, alert in prayer, steady in holiness, and discerning in their walk with God. A sleepy spirit is vulnerable, but a watchful spirit is protected by grace.

Let this truth awaken your heart today. Do not sleep through the moments when the enemy is sowing; stay awake in prayer, awake in the Word, and awake in spiritual sensitivity. Ask the Lord to keep your heart burning, your mind discerning, and your life anchored in His truth. The same Jesus who allows the wheat and tares to grow for a season also guarantees the final separation, vindication, and harvest.

Action Steps: Examine your life for any area where spiritual sleepiness has created vulnerability. Renew your prayer altar and refuse complacency in your walk with God. Practice discernment, especially around influences that look harmless but weaken holiness. Stay fervent in spirit, because alertness is part of spiritual warfare.

Quote for the Day: “When men sleep, the enemy sows; when believers watch, the harvest is guarded.”— (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)

Let Us Pray: Lord, keep me awake in spirit and alert in prayer. Deliver me from every form of spiritual sleepiness, negligence, and distraction. Expose every hidden work of the enemy in my life and preserve me as wheat in Your field. Make me fervent, watchful, and strong until the day of harvest. — in Jesus’ most glorious name. Amen.
