Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, July 19, 2021

Today’s Text: Proverbs 11:12-15

Key Verse: Proverbs 11:14 (NIV): “Where no wise guidance is, the people falleth: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Worldly people rarely take advice unless they have to pay for it. That is why secular consortiums and the likes of Dr. Phil are proliferating by the day. But for God’s people, we are blessed to have daily wisdom nuggets from scriptures. The book of Proverbs is full of several capsules of wisdom for our day-to-day living. Through His word, God provides us with moment-by-moment wise counsel for the sake of the special place we occupy for Him in the world. Bear in mind that we are His royalty and priests. And as such He prepares us in a special way for His use. He knows we need all the special counsel and wisdom we can get to live as His kingdom royalty. We need the inclination to choose the best and highest good. We need discernment to live carefully before the world. And only His Holy Spirit sanctifies a man by His word in that way. Dear friend, you need the wise counsel of the Holy Spirit to live successful Christian lives during this perilous generation.

When a ruler is surrounded by good counsellors he and his people are blessed. When a believer pays attention to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he is saved from falling away. And this truth is universal. Any wise guidance is good at all; but the counsel of the Holy Spirit in our lives is even better. It is our most valuable help. The import of this text is for us not to neglect the wisdom of the word of God: otherwise, we are apt to go astray. Our best sense of judgment is offensive, misleading and full of corruption. Despite being born again, our second nature (of sin) still exerts its terrible influence on our decisions each day. We cannot overcome fleshly advances with fleshly philosophy and asceticism. If we do, we would fall like the key text suggests. But if we turn to God for His ever perfect, always wise counsels through a sanctified conscience, there is safety for us.

Prayer: Lord, giver of true wisdom and understanding. I need your wisdom each day as I seek and follow Your direction. Guide me to always make the right decisions, in Jesus' name. Amen.
