Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 9:13-18
Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:16 (NIV): “So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.”
Yesterday, we made reference to the possible parallel to this scripture text from the world history of sieges. It was helpful to find likely events pointing to the time of this wisdom writing. We mentioned the siege of Athens by Xerxes and that of Dora by Antiochus the Great. But it is even more exciting to know that there are two more powerful scriptural parallels to this text — One in the Old Testament and the other in the New. The former being the siege of Abel-beth-Maachah in 2 Samuel 20:14-20 while the latter being the striking perfect parallel found in the story of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
When one considers the impersonal verb used in regarding the man of wisdom, and the subject of the verse preceding our key verse, then the king spoken of comes across as an antitype of Satan while the poor wise man he unexpectedly met with, the type of Christ. The word for “poor” in this passage is another clue. It is the word misken — very similar to the word used by prophet Isaiah to describe the servant of Yahweh, who will be the savior of the world. His description as despised and the son of man best fit Christ. Though He was not a mere man; but He was truly man, and He by that divine wisdom of being God yet becoming a poor man actually delivers us, His city, the church, the saints, and the world. No man by virtue of wealth, fame and strength is able to deliver his soul. Salvation comes only by the wisdom of God through Christ Jesus.
Quote for the Day: “Satan puffed himself as the great regent, but the wisdom of God hurled him down to a great regret.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to take it fully to heart that I cannot help myself by means of strength and scheme. Help me place my full trust and dependence on You. Teach me to seek and trust Your wisdom and direction in all I am or do — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayers,
