You can Fear no Evil: Introducing the Year to Overflow (Part 6)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, January 6, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalm 23:4 (ESV): “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

To the glory of God, we have already come to the sixth day of the year 2023; and it’s also our sixth episode of introducing the year of which God promised us overflowing blessings in all directions. However, it is important that we all know how Satan seeks to deprive us of our blessings or freedom to enjoy them by harassing us with fear. But God is always ahead of the devil. That’s why He want you to know the power available to you and your victory everyday and everywhere. You can make such confident claim as David: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil."

The reasons you can fear no evil are clear and simple: first, “the Lord is your shepherd.” By this, you can be confident because like a shepherd keeps his flocks, he watches over you; and indeed, neither slumbers nor sleeps. That is why the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. All through your journey both now (through 2023), and forevermore, the LORD will watch over your coming and going.

A second reason you will not need to entertain fear in your life this year, or ever again is the assurance that God is with you. Never down play on David’s “for you are with me.” Because those words were the reason 1.) though he was the youngest of seven sons (brothers), he outshined them all; 2.) though he was a tiny ruddy boy, he made a legendary showdown of the Philistine giant, Goliath while both Israelite and Philistine armies lined up in awe; 3.) though Saul commanded all artillery of war, he could only slay his thousands, whereas

David slew his tens of thousands; 4.) he never lost any battle; 5.) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart...’ (Acts 13:22); and 6.) with bare hands, he slew a beer and a lion.

The psalmist did not only learn that God’s presence with him overcomes even the very worst things he can ever face in life; he is here teaching us the same lesson so that when we too are faced with hard battles, or when life seems to overwhelm us, we never have to cower away in trepidation when we can say, “the Lord is my shepherd” and “for you are with me.” Yes, friend, if you can be confident about those two affirmations, then you can also be confident about “I will fear no evil.” Indeed, you can fear no evil be it in the darkest and most trying hour or thought you walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

Quote for the Day: “No danger or cause of terror—great or small—can unsettle the man who has God to be his shepherd.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I know that you never abandon me. I know that no circumstance is beyond your control or beyond your power. I ask that you hold me close and be with me every step of the way. When I get scared, remind me that you are always with me to assure, defend and protect me—in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
