Today’s Text: Jeremiah 31:15-17
Key Verse: Jeremiah 31:15 (NKJV): “This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing consolation, because they are no more.”
Life is filled with ups and downs. Here there is victory, and there a feeling of defeat. Sometimes the gain of rising up, and sometimes the pain of uprisings. Dancing for one, and weeping for another. Birth in one quarter, and death in another. Do you ever thought of, or felt this way? You are a real person, and you are not alone. All humans are marked by the complexities of different experiences and feelings. The word of God is filled with experiences of real men and women — ordinary and extraordinary people like you — who went through like passions and pain, just like you. The prophetic scene of the text before us plays out a sharp variance portraying the experiential contrasts we all pass through. You will probably notice the feeling of exulting joy that marks the previous verses. God’s people were never, are not, and may not be immune to sifting or shifting emotions. But whatever the case may be: God, the Holy One of Israel, promises that all agonies of the present will end on a note of joy.
Are you in any altered state? Please let this promise cushion and strengthen your heart. God sees your present pain. Overt or covert, your groanings are heard on high. The poetic beauty of this prophecy is in the use of Ramah. Yes, Ramah was a city in ancient Israel — one of the lands allocated to the tribe of Benjamin — but its usage here is from its original meaning of the word itself in Hebrew. Ramah means “heights” or "on high." Is it not refreshing to know that your voice is heard on high?! You don’t have to shout it. Your silent groaning are loud enough in the ears of God. His ears are never dull or heavy. He does not need an amplifier. Like this prophet, you may be seeing a present desolation, destruction, and depression. But, look up, and cheer up: the Holy One of Israel has spoken. Refrain your eyes from tears: for the promised future gladness is here! Rachel symbolizes the ideal type of all who weep for their slain or pain or those of their people. Your voice is heard on high and an end has come to groaning within your walls and borders.
Quote for the Day: “Believers’ duty and business is constant: to observe the precepts of Christ by doing what He says, going where He sends and following where He leads." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, reverse the order of things. Gladden the wounded spirits and bind up the brokenhearted, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
