Today’s Text: Proverbs 23:1–3; Daniel 1:8–16; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
Key Verse: Proverbs 23:2 (ESV) — “And put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite.”

God cares about what we take into our bodies because the body is not a toy, a trophy, or a temple of self-indulgence. On this International Eat What You Want Day, Scripture reminds us that freedom without wisdom can become bondage, and appetite without restraint can become a master. The Bible does not call us to legalism about food, but it does call us to discipline, stewardship, and reverence before the Lord.
Today’s text speaks plainly about the danger of unchecked appetite. Proverbs warns against being “given to appetite” because desire can distort judgment, weaken self-control, and lead the heart away from wisdom. Daniel gives us a better picture: when he resolved not to defile himself with the king’s rich food, he chose faithfulness over convenience and long-term purity over immediate pleasure. In the New Testament, Paul deepens the matter by reminding us that our bodies belong to God, not to cravings, because we were bought with a price.
This word is not only about spiritual holiness; it is also about practical health. What we eat affects strength, focus, mood, and even our capacity to serve God with energy and clarity. While grace allows freedom, wisdom teaches moderation, gratitude, and self-control. The believer does not need to live by fear of food, but neither should the believer be ruled by food. Health is often improved when we learn to eat with purpose, thankfulness, and restraint.
Child of God, this is your moment to examine your appetite in the light of God’s Word. Not every craving is a command, and not every desire deserves a yes. When the Lord governs your table, He also strengthens your testimony. Let your eating habits reflect worship, discipline, and stewardship, because the body that serves God should be cared for with wisdom.
Action Steps: Ask the Lord to show you any unhealthy pattern of eating or indulgence that needs correction. Choose one practical change today, such as portion control, better food choices, or prayer before meals. Honor God by treating your body as His temple, not your own possession. Use this day to celebrate freedom with discipline, not excess with regret.
Quote for the Day: “When appetite rules the table, wisdom leaves hungry; but when God rules the body, health and holiness grow together.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Let Us Pray: Lord, I thank You for the gift of food and the wisdom of Your Word. Teach me to honor You with my body, my appetite, and my daily choices. Deliver me from gluttony, careless indulgence, and every habit that weakens my health and my witness. Help me to eat with gratitude, discipline, and balance, so that my life may glorify You in spirit and body. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
