Today’s Text: Mark 10:17-22
Key Verse: Mark 10:18 (ESV): “And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

Skeptics have severally used today’s text to discredit and reject the deity of Christ. They claim that Jesus denies His own divinity by rejecting the notion that He is good. However, we must understand why Jesus being was both truly God and truly man rebuked the man for calling Him good. He was not denying His deity but He was affirming His humanity. His main goal is to show who God is, and teach man what we should be. He said those words for two reasons: first, presented a clear logic that he is actually God. Since only God is good, and He is unquestionably good; then He is God. Second, he wanted to help the rich young man, and all of us, to think through the implications and motives of his words. More than these, He wants him to recognize his lack of goodness.
Like most people, this young ruler approached the Master with a hidden sense of pride and religious legality. He came with a bribe. He came with works. Whereas there is nothing a man can bring that can qualify him before God. That is why he went away sad. If care is not taken, many of us will easily fall into this man’s shoes. We would mostly walk away sad and our religious ego would stop us from paying attention to things that matters most to God. Ask yourself today: in what ways am I like this man? Is your riches not of more worth to you than God? What is the true meaning and value of goodness to you? Friends, until we understand that many things that make us feel good or accept as good to us as men most of the time are not "good" in the eyes of God.
Quote for the Day: “Goodness is an attribute of God. It does not naturally flow from a depraved man’s motif or deeds; but as a fruit of God’s spirit in us." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, help me to always come before you, simply clinging to your finished works of grace rather than any self righteous works, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
