Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, October 15, 2020
Today’s Text: John 7:37-52
Key Verses: John 7:37 (KJV) — “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
Customarily, all male Jews travel up to Jerusalem to celebrate three annual religious feasts as commanded in the Levitical Laws. The feasts are both constant reminder of Yahweh’s past dealings as well as a call to look forward to His promised salvation which would come through the Messiah. Among all three, the Feast of Tabernacles stands out as a weeklong celebration. The Feast of Tabernacles is the fore-celebration of Jewish anticipated great day in which God would come down to earth to tabernacle among His people. Jesus who is the fulfillment of this rite, and all laws and prophets was among them; yet they did not recognize Him. For seven days, they were soaked in religious ritual, not realizing their greatest and deepest desire was already fulfilled.
On the last day of the feast, their chief priests fill a pitcher of water from the Gihon spring and pour it out on the alter to remind Israel of the rock that Moses striked in the wilderness. Unknown to them, that rock was only an antitype of a greater Rock, which is Christ. The rock of Moses sprang forth waters for their thirsty bodies; but Christ is the true stream of life-giving water that washes the body and heals the soul. He is the Rock of Salvation, the Living Water that brings spiritual refreshing. He brings life, health and grace to all who thirst. The Lord waited for the climax of the ceremony because God is always patience with us in our ignorance and devices. He waits for the fullness of time when all facts points to the highest truth, and all hearts thirsts for the living water. He is the true water of life, Who alone can satisfy the thirsty soul. His declaration to the spiritually thirsty Israel is still the same today: 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.' Jesus Christ is not just Israel's Redeemer; He is the Redeemer of all the world. He is living water to all who put their trust in Him.
Quote for the Day: "Until we realize our need for the true and living water, our desires would never cease from pursuing cisterns that hold no prospect.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, You are the living water that satisfies my soul and the heavenly bread that feeds my hungry heart, please fill me up and free me from empty cisterns, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
