Today’s Text: Genesis 1:1-3
Key Verse: Genesis 1:3 (ESV): “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

From the Hebrew yehi ˈor, or its Latin equivalent fiat lux, the words “let there be light,” literally issues a divine command: “Light, exist!” — an imperative address into the void and formlessness of earth’s initial darkness. Just like this command, God spoke everything else into existence, apart from mankind. The spiritual implication of this for man today is that apart from God’s word, we are in the formless void of darkness. But as long as we let the word of God into the abyss of our sinful life, the light of God takes its existence in our hearts.
Light represents illumination, and by the word of God, we are brought into a place of divine enlightenment. In its true form, it (light) is not itself a substance, it is a force that conditions states of matter. Jesus is that force personified. He said: I am the light of the world (John 8:12) — the Premier and Only Light. Ordinary, as a result of the fall, the shadow of darkness holds the human heart sway. But when the word of Christ reaches out to us, through the read or spoken word of God, meditation, or moments of worship, we come face to face with the creative divine yehi ˈor which brings us into spiritual illumination. This is what pushes back the frontiers of darkness.
Quote for the Day: "From the beginning when God said let there be light, to the wilderness experience, to the Feast of Tabernacles; up to this very day; Jesus remains man’s true Light and Life, .” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, let Your Light shine in my heart, in my home and in my world, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
