God Will Bring Down the Proud

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Friday, April 24, 2026

Text: Obadiah 1:1-4

Key Verses: “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee... Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.” — Obadiah 1:3-4 (KJV)

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, yet it comes to us with deep and profound revelation to God's people; and a severe word of judgment against their enemy, Edom. Edom’s sin was not only arrogance, but cruel pride against Judah in the day of calamity. Obadiah exposes the lie of self-exaltation by which their heart was lifted up. By that pride, it (Edom) begins to believe it is untouchable, secure, and above correction. Yet the Lord answers that deception with a solemn decree, showing that no height of human confidence can outrun divine justice.

The image of the eagle and the nest among the stars is a picture of exaggerated security and arrogant elevation. Edom thought its rocky strongholds, political alliances, and elevated position made it invincible, but God declares that even if the proud build their nest among the stars, He can bring them down. This is the warning of Obadiah 1: pride always overestimates itself and underestimates God. What appears high to men is still low before the Lord, who humbles the lifted heart and scatters self-exalting power.

This word is also a mercy to the soul, because pride often hides behind success, status, and comparison. Prayer reminds us that every exalted thing must be surrendered to God, and every stressor, fear, or insecurity must be laid before Him. In His presence, we find comfort not only for ourselves but also for others who are wounded by pride, oppression, or disappointment. The humble heart is the safe heart, because God gives grace to the lowly and resists the proud.

Action Steps: Today, examine your heart for pride in any form and bring it under the lordship of Christ. Refuse self-exaltation, boastfulness, and the illusion of independence. Pray over every personal burden and ask God to make you humble, teachable, and gracious. Let the comfort you receive become strength to comfort others who need God’s mercy.

Quote for the Day: “No nest is high enough to escape the hand of God when pride has deceived the heart.”— (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)

Let Us Pray: Heavenly Father, search my heart and deliver me from pride, self-exaltation, and hidden arrogance. Teach me to walk humbly before You and to rest in Your mercy rather than in my own strength. Bring down every proud thought and every lifted thing that competes with Your rule in my life. Comfort me with Your grace and make me an instrument of comfort to others. — in Jesus' most glorious name. Amen.
