Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, January 3, 2023
Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6
Key Verse: Psalm 23:2 (ESV): “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.”
How amazing and tranquil is it to know that God cares for us in such a special way as the Davidic metaphor of pastoral care! Though we have never journeyed through 2023 before, nothing can be more assuring than the blessed awareness of God's providential care. Perhaps, nothing and no one can beat God’s providence of refreshment, satisfaction, abundance, and the accompanying peace He gives so that we can lie down and enjoy all His blessings in our lives.
Lying down is a metaphor that depicts rest: an assurance that we can be confident in God’s continued favor without stress. Whereas, riches without God’s blessing jolt people into more pain; with God’s blessings, we can sleep while we bask in the green. Proverbs 10:22 tells us that “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.” The world system is always promissory but what do we have? — Failed promises, heartbreak, more stress. Yes, the world forces us into more exertion and labor. It makes us run between jobs; yet with more insecurity, lack, and emptiness. Only God gives sleep to His beloved. And, without Him, all our toil, waking up early, and sleeping late, or working nights are in vain. But in and with God, we can sleep.
Lying in God’s green is possible because His blessings make us rich without adding sorrows. The biblical idea of green pastures is the same as enjoying sumptuous spiritual food on God’s table. God's Word is green and fresh every day, and He delights to nourish us daily with it. To enjoy God’s green, we must be present at the table. He does not make the wayfarer sheep lay down. David’s symbolic metaphor invites a willingness to be present when and where God feeds His sheep with fresh spiritual food.
Quote for the Day: “All believers must learn the secret of being present at God’s pastures of tender grass before He can cause us to lie down to enjoy rich food, and bask in cool and refreshing rest.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being my shepherd! I don’t lack a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I am confident and feel secure that you walk by my side — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
