Our Words are Powerful

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Monday, June 8, 2026

Today’s Text: Proverbs 18:21

Key Verse: Proverbs 18:21 (ESV) — “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

God has placed extraordinary power in the words we speak. Proverbs 18:21 teaches that the tongue is not a small or harmless member of the body; it is a spiritual instrument that can either release life or spread death. Every day, through our words, we shape atmosphere, influence relationships, and either agree with God’s purposes or weaken them.

In today’s text, the wisdom writer reminds us that words carry consequences. Life-giving speech can heal, encourage, strengthen, and restore, while careless, bitter, or faithless speech can wound, divide, and destroy. This means our daily reality is not only shaped by what happens to us, but also by what we consistently say over ourselves, our homes, and the people around us. Words are seeds, and sooner or later, we reap what we sow.

The power of words is deeply relational. A gentle word can calm a tense conversation, a truthful word can bring clarity, and an encouraging word can revive a weary heart. When we speak with grace and wisdom, we create an environment where trust grows, hope rises, and peace settles in. Conversely, when our speech is harsh, sarcastic, or defeating, we can damage closeness and make it harder for love to flourish. God calls His people to become vessels through which His life is spoken into the world.

This truth also reshapes how we live each day. If death and life are in the power of the tongue, then our mouths must become aligned with faith, gratitude, truth, and blessing. Instead of rehearsing fear, complainings, or defeat, we are called to declare what God says, affirm what is good, and build others up with our speech. The daily discipline of speaking life does not deny reality; it submits reality to the transforming power of God’s Word.

Brethren, your words matter more than you may realize. Speak life over your mind, speak peace over your home, speak hope over your future, and speak encouragement into the hearts of those around you. As you do, God will use your words to reshape your daily reality and strengthen your relationships in ways you cannot fully predict.

Action Steps: Pay attention today to the tone and content of your speech. Replace every negative, fear-filled, or tearing word with words that are true, kind, and full of grace. Speak one sincere word of encouragement to someone who needs it. Pray before you speak, asking the Lord to make your tongue a channel of life.

Quote for the Day: “When our words carry life, our atmosphere changes, our relationships heal, and our world begins to align with God’s peace.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Lord, thank You for the power You have placed in my words. Help me to speak life, hope, kindness, and truth every day. Deliver me from harmful speech, complaint, and negative declarations. Teach me to use my tongue to build, bless, and strengthen the people around me. Let my words reflect Your heart and reshape my daily reality according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
