Storms Obey Him

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Thursday, May 7, 2026

Today’s Text: Mark 4:35–41

Key Verse: Mark 4:39 (ESV) — “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”

Life often brings us into seasons where the winds rage and the waves threaten to overwhelm. Storms arise suddenly—circumstances shift, fears intensify, and control seems to slip from our hands. Yet, in the midst of it all, this passage reminds us of a profound truth: even the winds and the sea obey Jesus. There is no force in nature or in life that operates outside His authority.

The disciples, though experienced with the sea, found themselves terrified by a storm beyond their control. Despite having Jesus in the boat, they were consumed by fear. How often do we find ourselves in the same position—walking with Christ, yet shaken by the storms around us? Their cry, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” reveals a moment where fear overshadowed faith.

Jesus’ response was not panic, but power. With a simple command, “Peace! Be still!” He silenced the storm. This demonstrates that His authority is effortless and absolute. What seemed uncontrollable to the disciples was completely subject to Him. The external storm ceased, but Jesus also addressed the internal storm: “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Storms have a way of revealing what we truly believe about Jesus. They test whether we trust His presence or doubt His care. The same voice that calmed the sea is able to calm the turmoil within us—fear, anxiety, uncertainty. When we recognize His authority, peace becomes possible even before the storm passes.

Child of God, whatever storm you are facing today, remember: it is not greater than your Savior. The winds may roar, but they still answer to Him. Invite Jesus into the center of your situation, and trust His power to speak peace over every disturbance. His presence in your “boat” is your assurance that you will not be overcome.

Action Steps: Identify any “storm” currently troubling your heart or mind. Bring it before the Lord in prayer, consciously surrendering your fear to Him. Speak His Word over your situation, declaring His authority and peace. Choose to trust Him today, even if the storm has not yet ceased.

Quote for the Day: “When Christ is in your vessel, no storm has the final word; His peace speaks louder than the fiercest wind.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are Lord over every storm in my life. When fear rises, help me to remember that You are near and in control. Speak Your peace into every troubled area of my heart and circumstances. Strengthen my faith to trust You, even when the winds are strong. Let Your calm rule within me, and let every storm bow to Your authority. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
