Today’s Text: Psalm 122:1 1-9
Key Verse: Psalm 122:1 (NIV): “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”
This Psalm is one of four Songs of Ascents in the Hebrew Bible. It was written by King David as a public expression of the essence, worth and future of the city of God, and His house of worship. It was his Royal declaration of what Jerusalem was, and what it would become. In the days of King David, people sang this song with pilgrimage excitement when it’s time for worship. Because worship was something they welcome as a feast, and embraced with great joy. Unfortunately, today’s spirit is different. Just look around, and you will see a fast emerging new and different future of worship. Whereas David’s generation rejoiced upon the call to worship God, and through this Psalm, they express how their feet abide in God’s presence; ours continue to seek a different glory and excitement.
O where is the joy of going to the house of the Lord? Where are the folks who move others to worship! Nobody assumed David was already religious, or, that he had the mind of his own like we would say today. They still said to him: “let us go to the house of the Lord.” And both the invitation and the acceptance were born on a joyful disposition. Where is that generation that loves the Lord, and shows loyalty to worshiping Him? Where are the believers who pursue the Lord and His house with such loving zest? Where are the few godly men and women who understand the need to gather before the God of all graces? — something that should make all godly people happy!
We have before us today a clear portrayal of God’s people’s attitude to coming together for worship. Unfortunately, this age seems to have lost the gladness of going to the house of the LORD. Many would not come. Some come, but it is not a glad thing for them. Only a godly priceless few feel the excitement and would invite others to “let us go into the house of the LORD.” When last did you feel that joy? When last did you call others to worship? This is a call to worship. Let us all wake up and reclaim this lost blessing.
Quote for the Day: “Godly people must be excited with truly gracious spirits to, for, and upon their duty to God. This is not only their call, but it is also their joy.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, fill my heart with deep longing for You. Give me a burning desire to be in Your presence, and an eagerness and willing spirit to do what Your word says — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
