Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, October 10, 2022

Today’s Text: Psalm 16: 1-11

Key Verse: Psalm 16:8 (KJV): “I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Are you like several millions of people asking the sincere question: How do one get needed break in life? How do you fulfill your dreams and thrive in the areas of your life that matter most? The Psalmist offers us insight to an incontestable secret: He admonishes all Israel (spiritual or biological) to “delight yourself also in the LORD and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” We all have struggles battling against ego, self, and needs. And so we are tempted to focus only on the latter part of the admonition.

We want God to give us whatever our hearts desire. But we fail to realize the insight already given as a precursor in and to the context. A lot of sugar-coated speeches exist today, which presents nugget points on things you must do to create a personal breakthrough—things like hit a low point, self-realization, audacity, resilience, paradigm shift, etc.

All these may appear so good, or even simply intuitive, or workable; but the way to have our heart desires met or fulfilled is to delight ourselves in the Lord. This is taking our eyes off our circumstances and fix them on Christ who is the true source of all delight. God already created us with the longings for Him. We must be pumped towards all the wonders of who He is—His excellent greatness and works. In that way, He blesses us with genuine desires, which He also brings into true light.

Quote for the Day: “Delight and desires are counterparts in God’s economy. If you desire a thing based upon your delight of God; He brings your desire into light.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You for Your word for me today. Please fill me, I pray, with Your delight and bathe my heart desires with Your love and defend my thoughts against demeaning lusts— in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
