Today’s Text: Psalm 51:1-12
Key Verse: Psalm 51:7 (ESV): “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

We probably are all familiar with the phrase “back to the sender!” Now, may we just reflect on what it may be like if we would all return to the Washer (the Lord) to let Him wash our dirty lives and world! Today’s text represents David’s personal confession following the incidence of his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. Our sins differ from person to person but their weights and wages are the same. In this Psalm, we are shown how we may find true forgiveness and washing of our souls from the laws of sin and death.
David’s prayer is only a model of penitence and confession; greater than hyssop is the blood of Jesus. It washes whiter than snow. Hyssop was a brush-like plant in Israel, used to wash notorious stains. But what could wash the stains from the soul aside from the blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God?! During the Passover, God commanded Israel to sprinkle blood on the doorframes of their homes to set them aside or sanctify them. During the dedication of the tabernacle, they were to sprinkle blood for sanctification as well — each time hyssop was used.
Hyssop in the Old Testament is a type of spiritual washing by the blood through Jesus Christ. The blood of animals or another sinful person cannot redeem from sin. Only the blood of Jesus Christ washes us. Friends, His blood is our only hope of forgiveness. 1 John 1:7 tells us how his blood purifies us from all sin. Meaning that there is no dent from sin that Jesus cannot totally remove. When we go to Him for washing and confess our sins, He washes us in His blood, and we are made thoroughly clean.
Quote for the Day: “No need to dread the sin stains and consequences if you already, or can, trust in Jesus Christ, the washer and Savior of your soul.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I come before You and seek Your forgiveness. Wash me and cleanse me by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. I repent of all my sins and ask for help so that I may follow You and do Your Will in my life — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
