Cheerful Christlike Givng

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Today’s Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6-9

Key Verses: 2 Corinthians 9:7 (ERV) “Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his heart; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

As children of God, we have an unparalleled example of generosity shown toward us in Jesus Christ our Lord. He alone freely offers us all things; including His own life: such sovereign benevolence that has no iota of grudge. He shows mercy with utmost delights. He gives with absolute surrender and open alms. In today's text, the apostle admonishes all Christ’s children to be purposeful and cheerful givers. We are to give as the Lord has prospered us, rather than make our generosity what will appear respectable, or acceptable by men, which may never know or care that such generosity is not acceptable in the sight of God. So, give willingly, not grudgingly. Don't ever let a minister have to squeeze the gift out of you. Give generously like the honeycomb that drops naturally and spontaneously.

An unknown writer once narrated a story of a beggar, who by the roadside begged Alexander the Great for alms. As a poor and wretched beggar, the man had no claim and no right to solicit to the ruler. Yet the Emperor gave him several gold coins. When an adviser to the Emperor noticed Alexander’s generosity, he was astonished and said: "Sir, a few copper coins would have adequately met a beggar's need. Why give him several gold?" But Alexander responded as follows: "Cooper coins would be adequate for the beggar's need, but only gold coins are adequate for Alexander's giving."

God is more concerned with the heart of the giver than his hands. The value of any gift is more in the heart than in hands. That is why most giving are not met with grace and favor because they come from unacceptable motifs. Indeed, some people give with their hands and pull back with their hearts and countenance. But Apostle Paul wants our benevolence to be like our Lord's; who give with such grace to anyone who asks of Him. In discharging our duty to God and service to humanity, let us all be live our blessed Lord, who went about doing good with a ready, liberal, and cheerful spirit. This is what makes a happy, and ever a happier and Christlike giver. As believers in Christ, our lives must reflect the gracious, generous and unselfish fruit of redemption. The gracious and beneficent Spirit of Christ, who gave Himself, must be manifest in everything we do.

Quote for the Day: “The value of any gift resides more in the giver’s heart than in his hands.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, the ultimate generous giver of all things, I thank you for giving me the highest gift of all. Thank you for daily loading me with abundant blessings. Please help me to be a blessing to others in every good work, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
