Choose This Day

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Monday, May 18, 2026

Today’s Text: Joshua 24:14–21

Key Verse: Joshua 24:15 (ESV) — “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

God calls His people not into passive religion but into deliberate allegiance. In Joshua 24, Israel stands at a covenant crossroads, and Joshua presses them to confront the reality that every life is shaped by worship, loyalty, and decision. The call to “choose ye this day” is not merely about making a preference; it is about deciding who will govern the heart, direct the house, and define the future.

The context matters because Joshua is speaking to a people who have seen both the faithfulness of God and the dangers of divided devotion. They had inherited blessings they did not labor for, cities they did not build, and wells they did not dig, yet they were still prone to drift toward idols. Joshua therefore places before them the seriousness of covenant faithfulness: God’s grace must not be answered with half-hearted service. A life that has been rescued by the Lord must not remain neutral toward the Lord.

This word still confronts us today because modern idolatry is not always carved in stone; it often hides in ambition, comfort, approval, pleasure, fear, and self-rule. Every day, the believer is making choices that reveal whom he or she truly serves. To choose the Lord is to reject compromise, silence competing loyalties, and intentionally order life around obedience to God. The house follows the altar, and the altar follows the heart.

Choosing the Lord is also a declaration of spiritual leadership. Joshua does not wait for public opinion before he speaks; he leads his family and nation by conviction. His statement, “as for me and my house,” shows that faith is personal, but it is never meant to stay private. The home, the schedule, the budget, the relationships, and the priorities all come under the same holy question: who will we serve?

Child of God, today is not just another day to drift; it is a day to decide. The Lord is still calling His people to make a clear and courageous choice. If you choose Him, you choose life, order, peace, and purpose. If you choose Him, you choose the path where His presence goes with you and His covenant faithfulness surrounds you.

Action Steps: Examine the loyalties that compete with your devotion to God and renounce anything that has quietly taken His place. Make a fresh confession of faith in your home, your habits, and your decisions today. Choose one practical act of obedience that proves your allegiance to the Lord. Lead your household, your thoughts, and your plans with a renewed “yes” to God.

Quote for the Day: “A surrendered heart does not wait for convenience; it chooses the Lord before the pressure of the day has a chance to choose for it.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Lord, I choose You today above every competing voice, desire, and distraction. Give me the courage to serve You with a whole heart and the wisdom to lead my house in faithfulness. Deliver me from compromise, strengthen my resolve, and establish my steps in Your will. Let my life declare that You alone are Lord over me and my home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
