Do Not Nurse Hate

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, September 28, 2021

Today’s Text: Leviticus 19:15-18

Key Verses: Leviticus 19:17 (NLT): “Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.

Looking at the arrangements of Apostle Paul of what he describes as the works of the flesh, one sees the similitude; especially in the latter set. From sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and other things like these (Galatians 5:19-21), we should clearly see why the apostle warns against those. They are evidence-based nurses of any array of negativity you can ever imagine. Go through the set and ask yourself: can I truly harbor those works of the flesh in my heart and not nurse hatred and bitterness?

How can we be free from the life of the flesh and walk in the fruit of the spirit? How can we not harbor hate in our hearts? How can we love the unloveable, embrace those unattractive or uninteresting; and reach out to those who hate and despise-fully use us in warm affection? Our Lord already warns us to love those who hate us—those who have in them so much that is repulsive. Because all men are loved by God, and created in His image, regardless of who they are, they deserve to be loved, not hated. The reason God does not want His people to hate others is that hate is an acid that damages the vessel in which it is stored as well as destroys the object on which it is poured.

The standard of today's scriptural command touches on the practicality of genuine Christian love. We must rebuke one another in love when our brethren do us wrong. It is an evil harbor to secretly divulge issues between us and our brother to others, to malign him, or hate him, or cause others to do the same. At times our sullen silence is worse than flattery. It provokes hate as well. God wants to address every wrong in love and forgive one another even as God forgives us in Christ Jesus. Hate does not allow us to pursue forgiveness; instead, it targets or attacks the person to whom it is directed, and also inversely targets or attacks us as well.

Quote for the Day: Hate is a sword without a handle: before it pierces the target enemy, it wounds the hands of the holder. It is like fire: it burns down the store to kill a rat.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, You are a God of love. I want to love you more every day. I want to extend your love to others. Please convict us of our hate: whether we think it, speak it, advocate it, or act on it, or not. Take away the spirit of hatred from us Lord, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
