Fret not Yourself

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, March 3, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalms 37:1-11

Key Verse: Psalm 37:1 (ESV): “Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!”

It’s so easy to get entangled by the stands or standards of others so much that we run ourselves out of our racetracks. At those times, we need the Holy Spirit to step in to help our infirmities. Otherwise, we can try hard to distract ourselves with anything; but the more we tried the more our hearts race and almost fail. That’s what it means to fret. Or, isn’t that the feeling when we think life is all about stands and standards of others? Or when we trust in wrong people?

The Psalmist knows that we all fret about what others say, do and undo? And he wanted to help us get back on our feet. He has been where we are, and had actually felt like entering a hole in the ground or sinking into his own skin, probably just as you. But he says, do not get it wrong: No support system in this world is ever strong enough to keep a man’s heart from sinking, fretting or growing restless.

So when we feel slightly off zone, empty, or fretting, the Psalmist admonishes us to “be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!” What does it mean to fret? It is a state of being constantly or visibly worried or anxious. The original Hebrew word means “to burn or be kindled with anger.” Thus, the idea of fret not yourself means it’s your fault if you ever fret. You’re the one doing it to yourself because those you claim disappointed you never appointed you the first place! And so, you have the power, if you would, to stop the fretting!

Quote for the Day: “Among the greatest evil in the world as well as in the church is the idea that the end justifies the means. No one should think he can pursue a good end by evil means." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you in advance for answering my prayer and delivering me from self conceitedness. I trust that you will enable me to stop worrying, quit anger but rather shine the light of Christ today above the influence of others — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
