Fulfilling All Righteousness

Writer: Dr. Simon OlatunjiDr. Simon Olatunji

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, March 11, 2022

Today’s Text: Matthew 3:13-17

Key Verse: Matthew 3:15 (ESV): “But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

The phrase "to fulfill all righteousness" has always been an abused phraseology of the Bible for ages. Indeed, it is particularly problematic because of the way it often comes across when used wittingly to bribe away situations by a pretentious spirit. While righteousness is a crucial message of the Bible—something that, in the context in which it was used calls attention to a disposition of submission to God. The idea of "fulfill" in Matthew’s gospel is with reference to Old Testament prophecies. It also means to complete or perfect something. Therefore, how do we fulfill all righteousness? We do so when our lives are in submission to the written word of God regardless of whether it looks auspicious or not.

It was not auspicious forJesus, being the greater, creator, Master and Lord to be Baptized by John who was the lesser, created, and subject. But fulfilling righteousness is submitting the the scriptural order that the Servant of Yahweh was coming to be identified with sinners, and to bear their sins. It was righteousness for Him to truly become man (a sinner) to take back what man lost to the hands of the devil. And inasmuch as John’s baptism symbolized penitence and repentance for sinners who are desirous of cleansing and forgiveness, something that is not an act of John but of God. Therefore, this is submission to God’s will and plan for the forgiveness of sins for mankind. Are you willing to humble yourself each day in pursuance of the will of God?

Quote for the Day: “The Church that do wrong and feel right can never fulfill God’s righteousness.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please grant that my heart focuses on what is true, honorable and worthy of Your righteousness. Help me to pursue only what is right and consistent with Your Word and Will — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
