Go, Do Thou Likewise!

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, April 7, 2022

Today’s Text: Luke 10:25-37

Key Verse: Luke 10:37 (KJV): “And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

In over 3 decades of pastoral ministry, I have come to realize how easy it is for religion to put words and judgements in the mouth of Christians while the core of Christ like action is lacking in their character. We are quick hearers and teachers, but very slow doers. A good scriptural example stares us at the face today. It is so easy to judge the priest and the Levite but the practice of demonstrating love requires more than the open eyes. It requires an open heart, a patient spirit, and a brokenness that only the spirit of God wrought in our innermost part. Jesus is not looking for followers who will just listen to what He says; but friends who will do whatever He says as commands. He was so clear in his message to the poor rich man. He is clear to us: “Go and do likewise.”

In New York Times of April 10, 1971, Israel Shenker, in his article, “Test of the Samaritan Parable: Who Helps the Helpless?” shared how easy it is for Christians to get swallowed in/by the urgent pace of our world, and forget who we are, and what we are called to do. The article featured how two Princeton psychologists staged an experiment in which forty seminarians were going to record their sermons. Half were given the text on the good Samaritan; the other half could preach on whatever they wanted. They were given a specific route to take to get to the recording hall. This route took them past a man who was lying in the street, groaning and coughing. Unfortunately, of the forty seminarians, only sixteen stopped to help. One actually stepped over the victim, thinking he was blocking the doorway. Friends, ask yourself: If I were in that test, what would I do? Likewise? Or Otherwise?

Quote for the Day: “Genuine Christlikeness is when one is willing to be emptied while still feeling that’s like giving nothing.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, give me courage today, and always, to be a doer of your word. In a world that cherishes rhetoric and eloquent speeches, pious platitudes and empty religiosity, may I not be like the man that beholds his natural face in a glass and goes away, immediately forgetting what manner of man he was — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
