Today’s Text: Psalm 119:169-176
Key Verses: Psalm 119:175 (KJV): “Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.”
We all desire the gift of life, and claim the promise: “I will not die but live...” (Psalm 118:17a) But do we all go past the euphoria of religious claims to the place of purpose? May be not, or may be rarely. But is the purpose of life not to “proclaim what the LORD has done“ (Psalm 118:17b)? The metaphor of David’s prayer in Hebrew portrays the purpose of life, which is to pour forth streams of praise to God. That is what life’s gift brings to us: the opportunity to stand by the fountain-bead of God’s streams of praise in this side of Jordan.
The lesson God wants us to learn from David’s expressed prayer and desire for life, here, is that any heart taught and kept of Him (God) cannot but break out in His praise; and the fact that service to God is always the effect of Divine illumination. In this way, life is more of a duty than a privilege. Therefore, wether it is Israel as a nation, which symbolizes the church, or an individual Jew, symbolizing each Christian, today’s scripture is a reminder that the purpose of our existence and continuance of life is for the display of God’s glory and praise. Our lives is never to be lived for the purpose of self, but unto the Lord.
The word of God is very clear about the purpose of our existence. Patriarchs of faith understood this purpose and left us all examples that wether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. In his prayer, the psalmist desired grace and strength to know more of God and praise Him. Certain Greeks came all the way to the Jewish Feast in Jerusalem and begged earnestly to see or know Jesus. Paul desire was to know Christ and the power of resurrection. Man’s purpose in life is to know God and lift up the Lord in/with his life. God cannot be the spiritual strength and supports of His people without also being their song. Christ cannot be preeminent in their heart without being prominent on their lips. As long as our souls live, it shall, it should, and it must be to the praise of God.
Quote for the Day: "God cannot be the spiritual strength and supports of His people without also being their song. Christ cannot be preeminent in their heart without being prominent on their lips.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Gracious God, please give me the grace to be alive for You, the desire to lay my life down at your feet, bringing everything I dream of, everything I long for, everything I love and hold dear to the glory and praise of Your Holy Name, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
