Today’s Text: Matthew 13:1-9
Key Verses: Matthew 13:9 (KJV) — “Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
Yesterday’s text features the first time our Lord was using the spiritual formula of “whoever hath ears to hear, let him hear.” to warn us to heed God’s word. It has since become recurring as a necessary or essential end note to His teachings. Hence, it comes up again after the parable in today’s text. Jesus’ intention is to explain why the preaching of the gospel of the kingdom fails in some people and succeeds in others. He sets forth a case for the impeccable nature of the seed of His word, which does not and cannot fail. However, whenever failure seems to be the case, it can only be traced to the nature of the soil. The soul, our Lord says, is the heart of men, the receiver of the seed. What makes the difference is whether you receive the seed of God’s word with a heart-soil that is impervious and unbroken or one that is prepared, broken and watered.
To what shall we liken your heart and its condition with regards to the word of the Lord? How much have you profit with every opportunity of the preaching of the kingdom? Is it not high time you look inward and ask yourself why you have been all hearing and never coming to the knowledge of the truth? Is your heart like the soil on the wayside, which keeps the Word of God entirely outside? Or is your heart the shallow soil type that allows no root in its cores? Or may be yours is a heart full of weeds, that only supports certain amount of convenient seed, and chokes up the living seeds? The challenge from our Lord today is for each of us having heard all that is necessary for life and godliness, to take responsibility and ensure that the seed (His Word) secures a living root in us and in our life. It is therefore not a threat but a treat that He tells us: “Whoever hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
Quote for the Day: "All the nutrients of spiritually healthy life or the poisons of a soul lost in sin are planted and nurtured within the soil of the heart.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
