Leaving All, Following Jesus

Today’s Text: Matthew 4:18-25

Key Verse: Matthew 4:22 (ESV): Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

God still calls people today. When He does, He wants us to put everything aside for His sake—not just our pains, but also our gains. It is most likely that most readers miss just what it is that the apostles left behind when the followed Jesus. They left everything: their means of livelihood—the boats; their frustrations and shortcomings—the See; their pain—thoughts of their fruitless night; their gains—fishes caught from their miraculous encounter with Jesus; and their pride and love—their friends and families.

Those Galileans left us unbeatable examples that no life emptied for the Lord will ever go without being filled up. They may not be the most refined of men. They had broken nets, hearts, or lives. Among them were "sons of rage or thunder,” publican and swindler; but they left it all at the Master’s call.

In the days of Christ, to give up the life of home, and one’s regular occupations is an heroic act that is connected with the future and all its possible trials sufferings, and uncertainties. Yet they left all and followed the Master. What, today, is/are contending with you on following Jesus?! Is it age, rage, wage, fame, or ego?! Are you willing and ready, like these (Galileans), to give up your little for His much. Are you ready?

Quote for the Day: “There’s nothing on earth greater than God’s beckoning love: come broken and you will be mended; hardened, and you will be melted; empty, and it will fill you up.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: My Dear Lord and Savior, I am grateful for Your powerful and love; and for the power of Your love by which my heart is filled with the desire to love and follow You. Please help me to follow You with all my heart and forsake all — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
