Love Indeed is in Deeds

Today’s Text: 1 John 3:16-21

Key Verses: 1 John 3:18 (ESV): “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

Love—true, biblical and godly love—is essentially communicative. It always seeks to to express itself by how much it could impart itself or its blessings and treasures to others. Love never seeks reward. Its language is never what shall I get, but what shall I give? We find the greatest example, expression and experience of love in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our text-writer, the beloved apostle experienced the melting and genuine love of Jesus Christ in his life and world.

Through Jesus, he had learned how true love takes the burdens and sorrows of others upon itself. He knew the unrelenting and unrepentant dynamic of God’s love towards us, sinful men; and concludes love is not temporary or transient. It is a commitment that is meant to last regardless of circumstances. Love is never based upon the fact that things are going right or happy. It is not an emotional feeling. Rather, it is a choice of the will. Loving God takes us deeper than casual commitment. It doesn’t dwell in the realm of confessions alone; it takes a hold on everything we are and do. That is why it is only true love that produces foundation for deep and meaningful relationships.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your love for me. Please forgive me the sin of lack of love. Teach me true love so that I may exercise genuine and exemplary love that resembles that of my Lord and Savior— in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
