Today’s Text: Psalm 90:1-17
Key Verse: Psalm 90:12 (ESV) — “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
Today’s devotional episode is dedicated to my Ododoeye, on this day as we celebrate her birthday. Our passage today teaches us that whatever a man’s portion may be on earth, whether in prosperity or adversity, we must learn to count the right things. We all seem not to be much difference in our attitude and reaction to life. We are all apt to forget God’s goodness, or fail to remember our limitations. We forget the brevity of life and the transient nature of everything. Whereas, numbering our days should have been a natural thing for us, we all rather number things instead. Moses understood this as a subtle fall, and prayerfully sought a better and major pathway to wisdom. No matter what our days bring, we should not allow any of them to slip by unnoticed.
We must be weary of counting material things which are immaterial to our life. Yes, we are blessed to have silver and gold and we love to flaunt them. We are favored with lands, sheep and houses, and we glory that men can see them too. But a man’s life, Jesus says, does not consist in any of those things ( Luke 12:15). Why then should we allow the folly of our lust of the flesh and pride of life to deprive us of a pathway to wisdom? This text reveals that numbering our days leads to wise decisions. Therefore , if it will take us to beg God to help us in this matter, like Moses did; why not?! Why not pray God to teach us to number our days?! It will be a pity if we fail to realize our purpose on earth until we are ready to exit it.
Quote for the Day: “There is a common weakness of man: his energy mostly omits the essentials of life, and is driven toward the nonessentials. Only God helps a man to escape this consequence of his depravity.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Father in heaven, please teach me to number the days of my sojourn on earth so that I may apply my heart to wisdom. In Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
