Oh Pergamum!

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, July 30, 2023

Today’s Text: Revelation 2:12-17

Key Verse: Revelation 2:14 (ESV): “But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.”

Oh how today’s world has witnessed a massive manifestation of so called “sons of God” one would think—as far as our Claim’s are concerned! Most are so gifted and eloquent preachers and prophets. Balaam too was a gifted and eloquent prophets. And we might be living in the loop of a repeat biblical history. We must remember how Balak, the king of Moab feared that God’s people were about to cross the Jordon River into the promised land—just like we are closer to our salvation than we we first believed!

We must bring to mind how Balak sponsored Balaam to curse God’s people: whom when he (Balaam) could not curse, proposed to perverse with seductive Moabite girls to lure them in to idolatrous and immoral feasts, and unholy alliance—which The Risen Lord called the doctrine of Balaam when the evil trend was found in the Pergamum Church. So, He disapproved their tolerance of any trace of such corruption which has crept into the church.

Perhaps, today’s Church is even more Pergamos than the Biblical Church of Pergamum. We are closer to the original meaning of the word Pergamos itself which signifies mixed marriage. Or, is there no marriage of the today’s church with the world?! Whereas we have been called to be separated from the world; have we not totally become worldly? We would rather have the world or nothing! Our old time religion song have now unfortunately changed to “the world before me, the cross behind me,” and, we are in a clear church culture shift into libertinism and permissiveness.

Prayer: Dear Lord, deliver us from pressure from end time Balak. Help us to remain faithful to the Word of eternal life. Strengthen us to stand up against those who are drawn to the doctrines of Balaam for the sake of material gain — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
