Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, June 1, 2020

Today’s Text: Luke 9:51-56

Key Verse: Luke 9:55 (KJV): “But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

If you’re a believer who wants your own good alone, and/or get angry at people and systems when you cannot have your way, you need to watch out against the perspectives and tendencies of the sons of thunder. In today’s text, the way they saw others was corrected by the Lord, who rebuked them, saying: they do not know that the spirit they are given. The spirit of Christ is one of gentleness and love, and yielding to strife can never result in righteous anger, but yields to an evil mind.

It was these same brothers, James and John, who requested to have the chiefest places of His kingdom as personal honor. Each time, they came up with tendencies that are not in the spirit of Jesus Christ. They were ignorant: thinking that His kingdom would begin on earth. And, they were selfish: for in God’s kingdom, nobody should seek only the good of self. The spirit of Christ actuates a proper love for Him and others — a love that’s not given to self preference or revengeful feelings. Ask yourself this question: is my love and zeal driven by improper position or opposition toward others?

Quote for the Day: "From His birth to Gethsemane and to the cross, the spirit we see of Christ is wisdom to give up lesser for the sake of greater.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, help and teach me to be like You, in Jesus name. Amen.

I wish you a happy June with all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
