Surer than Mountains

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, February 10, 2023

Today’s Text: Isaiah 54:1-17

Key Verse: Isaiah 54:10 (ESV): “For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

Why do people have heartbreak and are wounded by great sorrows? Is it not because we love to risk all the strength of our lives seeking peace and joy from wrong things? We base our strength on things that fail, fall, fade, and change. We love the attraction of vanities and are often deceived by their loftiness and appearances. We always forget that no world’s goods abide forever. That is why we cast aspersion on the real lasting things that are better than life.

The prophet places before us a very strong illustration of the temporality of everything else outside the love of God. He reminds us how a mountain that once appeared so fixed and permanent can melt into a depression at any time. He pictures before us how everything in this world is temporary, and so easily loose their place and value. Yes, earthly goods always look film on the surface but slip and fade away with time.

Only God’s covenant of peace, established by the blood of Jesus Christ, truly touches and fills the heart. Only God’s loving kindness rules and wins amid all life’s wounds, temporality and disappointments. It is the only covenant and reality that stands forever. As for the mountains; they quake, fail and are removed. So, why not put your trust in Jesus for true life, peace, hope and joy! Now!

Quote for the Day: “Men who seek permanence in things only find weariness. Only those who seek Jesus find peace. (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You for Your word today. You've called me to seek Your kingdom above all else. To make knowing You a priority. As I spend my strength pursuing You each day. Please, reveal areas in my life that need to be fully submitted to You — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
