Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, August 27, 2022

Today’s Text: Genesis 28:10-22

Key Verse: Genesis 28:17 (NLT): “But he was also afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven!””

Whereas God’s ways and principles of dealing with man remain consistent through ages and dispensations, his methods are diverse. No one can determine what God does, how He does it and why. His ways are simply past finding out. You may not be like Abraham, who has many bright spots, you may not have a great and fantastic story or journey of faith. But God always has a plan to meet His men at their own Bethel. Jacob’s story is a vivid Old Testament example of how God lays hold of any man He chooses.

His story images who we are in many respects. Many of us have hearts for God. Yes, we wanted to be great vessels in His hands. We wanted to become and do great. That’s Jacob right there. He nurtured a heart for greatness and wanted to be the man at all cost. He coveted the path to greatness so earnestly. He sought God’s promised Abrahamic blessing desperately. That’s us right there. And, also like a type of you and I, instead of waiting God's time, we often try to obtain it for or by ourselves by all means and at all cost.

Our unbridled desires often set us on journeys that God has not chosen. That is why we all need a Bethel. I welcome you to a journey through Jacob’s path to Bethel, and his experience there — his dilemma, his wonderful dream, the stone underneath his head, the ladder upon which the angels of God ascended and descended, and the unmistakable evidence that God shows up in a man’s life to help him.

Quote for the Day: “Bethel reminds us of our futility, instability and unsettled life. But more that these, it reminds us of the God, who shows up when life tastes bitter.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, Bethel happened to Jacob suddenly just like the Pentecost happened to the disciples suddenly. Please let there be a sudden 360 degrees turnaround for me today — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
