Today Text: Jeremiah 31:15-17
Key Verse: Jeremiah 31:15 (ESV): “Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah,
lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.””

The devastating story of the 18-year-old gunman’s rampage that left 19 children and two adults (teachers) killed yesterday leaves our entire world awestruck and heartbroken. We are all, again, brought to our knees as we mourn this tragic loss. However, today’s scripture presents us with a unique pre-figuration of the trauma of a people broken by the tragic loss of loved ones. Through the weeping matriarch, God identifies with, and shows compassion for people whose hope are shattered and seems not (easily) reclaimable as a result of the violence. In God, we have a loving father and High Priest who not only is touched by the feelings of our infirmities; but always demonstrates His love toward us, His children.
Friends, despite all the pains in this world, God loves us! His love is always reaching out, and coming after us though we always reject His ways and love. Yes, though our rebellion always brings all the pain to us; God always corrects us with great kindness in His judgment. Therefore, while we are hit by this terrible mishap, and ravaged by evil, God sends His oracle to us: “I hear your voice of mourning, your lamentation and bitter weeping for your children; and your refusal to be comforted because they are no more.” First, it is comforting to know that God hears our wailing voices as a people. “A voice was heard in Ramah.” He said. From Isaiah 10:29, Ramah was the scene of some gruesome massacre from Assyrian invaders during the reign of Hezekiah. A similar scenario was Herod’s massacre of the infants of Bethlehem. But this is what the Lord who redeems His own says, (vs 16): “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work. — That is, though it appears that you brought forth those kids in vain, God has a way of rewarding parents by His comfort, providence, and succor.
Quote for the Day: “God cares for us. He values us much more than the most watered garden; yes, much more than the beautified Lilies.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, You are the God of all grace, who called us to Your eternal glory in Christ. Please grant that, after we have suffered this loss a little while, You will Yourself restore and make us comforted, strong, firm, and steadfast again — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
