The Call to Fight

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, December 8, 2024

Today's Text: 1 Timothy 6:12

Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV): "Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses."

Believers in Christ are called to a fight. It is the good fight of faith. This fight is not a physical one, but a spiritual one. It's a fight against the forces of darkness, against the flesh, and against the temptations of this world. It is not the kind of fight we see within our church ranks today: in which brethren rise against brethren to pull down one another and try to take advantage of each other's weak points. No. We are called to contend for the faith that brings eternal life.

Paul encourages Timothy to take hold of the eternal life to which he was called. This call is not just for Timothy, but for all believers. We are called to live a life of faith, to take hold of the eternal life that Jesus offers us. But how do we fight this good fight? And, how do we take hold of eternal life? Fighting the good fight requires a deep understanding of our identity in Christ. As believers, we are no longer slaves to sin, but sons and daughters of God, heirs to the kingdom of heaven (Romans 8:14-17, Galatians 4:4-7). This identity gives us the confidence and authority to fight the kingdom of darkness through the Holy Spirit working within us (Ephesians 1:13-14, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

To take hold of eternal life, we must also cultivate a deep and intimate relationship with God. This relationship is built on prayer, worship, and the study of God's Word (Psalm 119:105, Matthew 4:4, 1 Thessalonians 5:17). As we draw near to God, He draws near to us, giving us the wisdom, strength, and courage we need to fight the good fight (James 4:8, Psalm 46:1-3). In addition to our relationship with God, we must also be mindful of our relationships with others. As believers, we are called to be salt and light in the world, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:13-16, 22:37-40, Romans 12:14-21). By building strong, loving relationships with others, we can create a support system that helps us fight the good fight and take hold of eternal life.

Action Steps: Stand firm in your confession of faith. Be willing to suffer for the sake of the gospel. Experience the joy, peace, and fulfillment that come from living a life that is pleasing to God.

Quote for the Day: "Christians are not fighting against people, but against the forces of darkness that seek to destroy our faith." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for calling us to fight the good fight of faith. Help us to take hold of the eternal life that Jesus offers us. Give us the strength and courage to fight against the forces of darkness that seek to destroy our faith. May we be faithful soldiers of the cross, standing firm in our faith and declaring our faith boldly and unashamedly — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
