The Flint Face of Faith

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, April 12, 2021

Today’s Text: Isaiah 50:4–11

Key Verse: Isaiah 50:7 (KJV) — “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”

This text is one of the most important Messianic prophecies of hope. It is categorized among the Servant Songs of the promised Christ; and it is actually the third of the Songs. In the heart of human desperation comes the promise of the suffering Messiah, who will bring the dawn of great light to people walking in the land of deep darkness. Whereas our age, on the one hand, is filled with diverse lust and license, and the human life is laden with burdens of guilt and death; Christ’s sacrifice assured us an escape from shame.

Tthe prophet in verse 7 expresses exemplary confidence in God. Let us take a cue from how he refused to shrink back from trusting God for His promises, despite severe suffering, opposition, and humiliation. Amidst our troubled generation, we too have received a sure promise of help through Christ. He will not put us to shame. He is Sovereign over the world of people and materials. He will help us, and we shall not be put to shame. This secret is portrayed in our key text. We must do just one thing; we must set our face of faith like flint with trustful reliance in lively hope in the God of promise. It is this kingdom of hope that makes not a-shame.

The word flint is a common biblical metaphor for constancy of trust. It portrays the obstinacy of obedience, and the unwavering confidence in God; especially during dark days. We need more of such constancy and perseverance ofin faith today than ever. To lay hold on God’s promises, we need such eye of faith to alley the reproach of shame. Because of the hope set before Him, Jesus set His face like a flint and endured the humiliation of the cross. He fulfilled this Messianic prophecy of Isaiah. He offered His back to those who beat Him, His cheeks to those who pulled out His beard. Instead of hiding His face from mocking and spitting, He set it like a flint and laid us an example that we also should follow in His footsteps.

Quote for the Day: “The Gospel in a nutshell is a life saved through Christ, sold out in constant trust in Him, and steadfast in the hope of glory.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, give me daily strength to fight the good fight of faith. Please keep my eyes on eternity, in Jesus name. Amen.

Please have a glorious week ahead, with all my love and prayer,
