The “One Thing” Path (Part 3)

Re Today’s Text: Mark 10:17-31

Key Verse: Mark 10:21 (ESV): “And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.””

Is knowing God and the heart of surrender to Him a difficult thing? How difficult is it to know, love and follow such a good and loving God? Unfortunately, the hardness of our hearts makes us slave away to live and follow things and people that are inconvenient to us rather than the loving and kind God.

People find it hard to follow and submit to wicked consuls and overlords that use them as touts and dogs. But they will turn away in anger from the God who loves them and is willing to bless them. See how Jesus, in this passage looked at the man and loved him. Yet for the “One thing” that he lacks, he was disheartened by the saying, and turned away sorrowful. Jesus beholding him, loved him; but the young man did not love the Savior. He loved materials more.

O how well and often this represents us. Like the young ruler, many of us show great earnestness concerning how to be happy for ever, but our passion for gains and great possessions rob of of the “one thing” necessary for life and godliness. That’s why many make all the money but are still not happy.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for Your immense love for me. I ask You for the grace to open my heart and receive Your love more and more each day. Please reveal to me that unplowed “one thing” within me that are impacting my full receptivity to the Love You offer me freely at every moment — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
