Watch Out for the Groom

Writer: Dr. Simon OlatunjiDr. Simon Olatunji

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, March 15 2020

Today’s Text: Matthew 24:32-42

Key Verse: Matthew 24:36 (NASB ): ”But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

Apart from all unexplainable unfolding global events that continue to defy knowledge and science, the words of Christ in today’s text also testify to the limitations of knowledge in a most striking way. This is a reason to both be grateful as well as be watchful: any ability to have full knowledge may be injurious to man. That’s why God allows us to know only in part. Thus, the Gospel writers admonish us that since we do not know the hour and season of our visitation, we must continue to wait patiently for the imminent return of Christ.

Christ’s return may be likened to that of a young man, who was to return home and be married, but came sooner than his bride-to-be expected. He did not notify her of his exact time of return because he desired to please her with a surprise. He loved her devotedly and had worked hard and saved all his earnings to purchase a home for her. Unfortunately, when he arrived, he found his bride-to-be in the embrace of another man. His heart sank within him and went away never to return. The questions for us today are: 1.) Would we be ready when our groom, the Lord, shall come? 2.) If Jesus came today, how would He find us, His professed bride? And, 3.) Are we watching out for Him?

Quote for the Day: "Human‘s inability to know the future is an untold act of God’s mercy that we must responsibly embrace.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please give me a virile determination both to suffer long and to wait for you, O God, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
