What I do Have I Give to You (Part One)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, February 26, 2024

Today’s Text: Acts 3:1-10

Key Verse: Acts 3:6 (NIV): "Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”"

Peter didn't have any money, but he did have authority from Jesus to heal the sick (what I do have I give to you). Peter knew what it was like to have God use him to heal others, because Jesus had trained him in this (Luke 9:1-6). The lesson we can learn from Peter's assertion here is that even when we don't have material resources to offer, we can still give what we have, whether it be our time, talent, or effort. We can guve our faith, love, compassion and lifestyle gracefulness away. It's about recognizing that, in Christ, we always have something valuable to offer, regardless of our outward situation or condition.

Additionally, it highlights the importance of generosity and willingness to help others with what we have, rather than excusing ourselves due to lack of material resources. There was justification for Peter's statement so that he coukd get away with excuses. As a fisherman, Peter likely didn't have much material wealth or possessions. And, as a disciple of Jesus, he had left his old life and possessions behind to follow Jesus. He was acknowledging his own poverty and humility, abd demonstrating his rich area in Christ. We don't have to rely on material wealth to help others.

Quote for the Day: “Silver and gold have I none" is an expression demonstrating reliance on God rather than material possessions." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear God, I thank you for the lesson from Peter's words, reminding us that true wealth lies not in silver or gold, but in the richness of our faith and the blessings we share with others. Help us to trust in your abundance and generously offer our time, talents, and love to those around us. May our hearts be filled with humility and our hands be open to give and receive with gratitude — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.

It's my birthday today, and what I have I give with all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
