Where are God’s Zealots?

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, February 18, 2023

Today’s Text: Jeremiah 20:7-18

Key Verse: Jeremiah 20:9 (GNT): “Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.”

Do we ever stopped to wonder or ponder on what has happened to all God’s zealots? Where are the few men who cannot stay silent—in whose bones the word of the Lord to this untoward generation is like fire stocked in the bones?! Where have they all gone? Can today’s believers learn the secret of constancy, perseverance and steadfastness as we serve the Lord? How can this generation free itself from permissiveness, lechery and other unwholesome desires? Where are men like Isaiah, Elijah, Daniel, Jeremiah and David, Peter, and Paul — a few men, who are eaten up by the zeal for God’s house, and His work?!

It’s easy to know a man with zeal for God. His strength is consumed in it. His heart is sold and his pride, passion and joy is all about the Master’s business. Like Jeremiah, he has frustrations and fears; but he cannot stop being jealous for God’s name. No, he can’t stop loving God’s people. When God’s name, work and people are reproached; a man of zeal for God sees the reproaches as fallen upon him. They’d rather become the butt for arrows intended for the Lord than keep quiet while children die with milk in their mouth.

Where are the Davids who are ready to break their sleep desiring the night-watches to meditate on God’s word (Psalm 119:148)? Where are the men who are touched when men turn themselves to God’s adversaries and forget His words (Psalm 119:139); and are glad when it’s a call to go into the house of the LORD (Psalm 122:1)? O, where are the men like Paul who will press forth to lay hold of eternal life? And where are the few Annas who will serve God with fastings and prayers night and day?

We may not be all these people; but we can at least learn from them. Jeremiah complains of the insults and injuries he experienced while serving God; yet declares his persuasion never to quit. To him, God remains supreme — our stronger and better influencer, whose words we cannot hold in. And we can learn from, and fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Quote for the Day: “Cast me into the sea, let me lose my place, rather than the name of Christ should suffer for me." (Jeremiah Burroughs)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to fix my eyes on You. Teach me the way of enduring the cross, scorning its shame, until I am set down before Your throne. Fill my lungs with zeal so that I may not grow weary and lose heart — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
