Today’s Text: John 8:39-47
Key Verse: John 8:44 (ESV): “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

We live in an age in which deceit, the act of lying, misrepresenting, misleading, hiding, and distorting realities is the order of the day. This is much more so because we live in a world dominated by the father of lies and all liars. Unfortunately, Christians who are called to be different are also trapped in the intricate web of deceit or deception. Bear in mind, deception does not just involve lying. It can consist of misrepresenting or omitting the truth. It can be someone’s deliberate attempt to cover-up something. O how many so called believers, lay and cleric, have been swallowed by this terrible slough of despond — indeed, a much more terrible swamp of despair, much deeper than the bog in John Bunyan's allegory, into which the protagonist Christian sinks under the weight of his sins.
The New Testament word for lying is xaploméni, and it is also a close match of the Old Testament idea. It connotes more than just speaking false things. It is thinking and manifesting pretense. It is when a person disagrees with truth or fails to fulfill their genuine purpose or function. When a person knows God's truth and does not agree with it, he is lying. When you are aware that something is wrong and you keep quiet or look away to protect, safe or help the situation or a person, you are lying. The Bible is very clear about the position of God concerning lying. Proverbs 12:22 warns that“The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in people who are trustworthy.” Also, Proverbs 25:1 says: “Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.” Ask yourself this sincere question: Why am I struggling with lies or why can’t I stand in truth? In today’s text, Jesus offers us the truest response: you do so when you make the devil your father.
Quote for the Day: “ “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind” is a direct scripture expression indicating man’s discreditable reputation." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I choose to be led by your Spirit of Truth. Help me to recognize His leading, to discern His voice, to understand His direction. My desire is to honor the Spirit of Truth in my life. and to shun lying tongues or habits, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
